Triathlon Bonanza – Drew Hunthausen, Blind Motivational Speaker

As my tandem captain and I  approach the last leg of our 20k bike portion of the UCI Zot Trot triathlon, I am overcome with a feeling of exhilaration and accomplishment! 2/3 done with my fifth triathlon in 5 months, and only a short swim in a heated pool to go.

Half way through the swim, I hear someone yelling at me, “there’s an old lady on your tail”. I knew there could be only one “old man” yelling at me like a “crazy old lady” from the deck, my dad! I did speed up a little, but it was difficult to maintain the coordination of my strokes while trying sooo hard not to laugh!

My first triathlon was in October of 2016, and it’s only gotten better since. The swimming, biking, and yes even the running, has become easier and more enjoyable. It is hard for me to believe how far I’ve come in my fitness abilities in a relatively short time. I know one thing for sure though, I could not have done it alone.

My good friend, Daniel Powell, has been a faithful and experienced guide. Daniel’s expertise has meant a great deal to me. I couldn’t be doing these swim-bike-run events without his enthusiastic participation.

The Running, biking, and triathlon communities are also incredibly supportive and encouraging in general. In a couple of the events I was the only challenged athlete and was given special recognition at the awards presentation (and even received a beer glass along with my finisher’s medal, like the other category winners). I am so grateful and blessed by all the support and love I am surrounded by. The Triathlon Club at UCI and Renegade Races have been especially generous in their support of my triathlon endeavors thus far.

My friends, participating in a triathlon may not be your thing, though I would encourage you to try one if you are so inclined and can make the time to do some training. However, moving forward and bettering yourself in any way is so important. I encourage you to take that next step in your journey, and consider trying something new and exciting toward the goal of bettering your health, your relationships, or your work. For when you do, only the best is yet to come!
