Who Are You Becoming?

“Anger, Resentment, and jealousy won’t change the heart of others- it only changes yours.” Shannon Alder

Recently in the United States we celebrated Thanksgiving. As I reflect on the blessings of family and the wonderful time I had visiting my aunt and uncle in Northern California, the reality of how much time we as a society spend and focus on the problems, the negative, and the hate in our world, really struck me. The things we listen to or watch, the people we may choose to spend time with, and the material we read, all play a role in how we think and subsequently how we feel and act. In the end they define who we are becoming.

This doesn’t mean a person can’t check out the news, but it does beg the question, where, or on what, is your primary focus? Who are you becoming? Who do you want to become?

During our visit we played cards, took long walks, and laughed a lot over great food at the dinner table. There was no time to think about the negative things going on in the world. Instead I was frequently reminded of how blessed and grateful I am to be who I am, live where I live, and to appreciate each day as it comes.

In the midst of all the negative noise in the world going on around you, I encourage you to focus on the good. Find the things to be grateful for in your life, your friends, your family, your faith, a kind word, a smile, a beautiful sunset, and let gratitude and love define how you feel and how you act. Spend time with the people you love, doing the things that make you happy, bring you joy, and leave you with an abundant spirit.

Let there be no room for the anger, the resentment, or the negative. Instead move forward with a heart of love and gratitude. I thought you might appreciate this quote from Zig Ziegler,

“Look back in forgiveness, forward in hope, down with compassion, and up with gratitude.”

2016 is just a few weeks away. Let’s make it the best year ever!

For with a thankful heart, only the best is yet to come!
