Inspired: How Do You Eat An Elephant?

Elephant pic for blog

Seminars, conferences, trainings, and on and on… the past several months have been crazy busy with speaking opportunities, conferences, a ton of valuable time spent getting my business organized, and trying to fit in the rest of the important things in my life at the same time. Looking ahead at the whole picture gets a bit overwhelming at times as I wonder how I will be able to get everything done and hold it all together. Can anyone relate?

The truth is that we all are on our own unique journey and it often gets overwhelming. We feel like we are getting pulled in every direction with so much to do, and we don’t know where to start. The job of our life just seems so big, a little like eating an elephant. Eating an elephant is obviously a huge and seemingly insurmountable task for the average person, but there is a way to get it done without destroying our emotions and our digestive system at the same time.

The proper way to eat an elephant, figuratively speaking, is the same way we must view managing the whole of our lives, one bite at a time. The key is to break down the things you must do into pieces, and rank them as to importance and urgency, a daily exercise that typically takes about 15 minutes once you get it rolling. Only then can you accurately identify what you really need to address first.

With the most important and urgent thing now identified, you can work on that piece and know with confidence that the rest can wait. When you hit your goal for that task, you move on to #2. Your stress and overwhelm will begin to dissipate as you consistently employ this daily exercise. Of course life’s unexpected urgencies come up in the process, but at least now you have developed a framework to move through them. With practice you will get better and better as you learn to manage all the important parts of your life’s journey “one bite at a time”.

Be inspired as you live life to the fullest “one bite at a time”. For the best is yet to come!
